Civilization Evolved April 17, 2010 Filthy Raider (Dorset, England) Having waded through incarnation IV on the PC I did feel that buying this on the XBox was probably going to be one of the poorer games purchases I had made. How wrong I was to be proved.
Yes, there are issues. It can be repetitive, but then again the game was always meant to be one you played from start to finish maybe over several sessions, but what sets this apart is that it is possible to sit down and play through to a win or loss within one session of about four/five hours.
Your first delight will be the way other leaders and your advisors appear as animated characters in front of your world map. As the ages progress your advisors evolve in their fashions - your tech guy starts out as a wizard and ends up in tweed as a university professor!
As someone has already mentioned the army and navy and airforce units can now be combined in threes into 'armies', 'fleets' and 'wings'.
Victory can be achieved in various ways - Domination, Economic, Cultural, Technology and so on, and you get G for each and for winning as each leader.
Is it better than the PC version? Not really, as you can argue the PC version has far more solid depth. But it is more 'fun' to play. You can actually sit down and play a session and see a conclusion within a reasonable time frame.
Yes, the other leaders will start wars with very little reason. You'll get wins on Warlord and Chieftan levels but anything higher and you will get a bit of a fight.
THe graphics are slightly more cartoony than the PC version but actually more satisfying, especially the battles.
If you can get this under a tenner it is really top value. Above that it is still worthwhile. Even if you own this on the PC I would recommend it as an addition to what you already have.
This shows you can do this type of game on a console. The exciting thing is if this is attempt one, then the future is bright!
a little bit disappointed March 11, 2010 He Yilun (France) Honestly, it's a very good game and I got a great pleasure playing it. But comparing to these classic PC versions, it is too simple and hardly has something to explore. I'm a little bit disappointed, but regarded as a XBOX game, it's definitely worth playing.
Good game for everyone February 26, 2010 pauline (uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game was bought for my husband but has been taken over by my 10 year old son who loves the challenges. An interesting side effect is that he now understands the concepts of democracy/dictatorship etc and also has picked up knowledge of ancient civilisations so recommended as part of national curriculum!! don't worry about the certificate on this - it's fine for any age child who can read.
A very good game, could last a little longer! February 15, 2010 Mr. J. Whittle I quite liked the graphics on this game they were very entertaining. As for the gameplay; very similar to the others in the series but possibly a bit short? I'm sure I remember taking more than 3-4 hours to complete a game with one civilization! One final drawback; it seems as though there are less units in this game than the rest and actually come to think of it the advisors get a little annoying after a while.
Download the demo before buying which I would do with any game anyway!
There's plenty of different way's of playing it so more than enough play time!
Return to form October 8, 2009 Ben Larsen (London, UK) I was a fan of the original Civilisation game way back when, so for me this was a fantastic re-jig of that original one. Love it!
